Methodology + how to use this data
Sources: BLS Occupational Employment Statistics (May 2025 release) for salary medians, US Department of Education College Scorecard for tuition + earnings outcomes, PayScale College Major ROI Reports for self-reported survey averages, and Federal Reserve Bank of NY Liberty Street Economics for underemployment data.
ROI payback formula: Years = (Total Tuition + Living Costs + Foregone Wages) / (Annual Post-Graduation Salary − Cost of Living − Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan Interest at 7.5%).
Lifetime earnings premium: Total earnings of a typical college graduate in this major over a 40-year career minus typical earnings of a high-school graduate over the same period. Reflects mid-career compounding and late-career senior/leadership compensation.
What this data does NOT capture: personal interest fit, geographic flexibility, recession cyclicality, automation risk over a 30-year horizon, second-career flexibility, graduate school multipliers (MBA / JD / MD), or non-financial returns (work satisfaction, social impact).
Recommended use: Treat ROI as one input alongside aptitude, interest, and risk tolerance. A bottom-quartile ROI major can still be the right choice if it aligns with personal motivation that drives long-term performance — and a top-quartile ROI major is wrong if you cannot sustain effort.
