Quick answer

The cheapest verified options

For a full online bachelor's, the lowest verified totals are University of the People (about $7,260, WSCUC-accredited, fees only), UF Online for Florida residents (about $15,502 at $129.18 per credit, SACSCOC), Great Basin College for Nevada residents (about $23,115, NWCCU), and Georgia Southwestern's fully online rate (about $23,544, SACSCOC). For students with no in-state option, WGU ($3,850 per six-month term, NWCCU) and SUU Online ($315 per credit, NWCCU) charge everyone the same rate.

Every figure was read from the school's own tuition page on September 17, 2026, and the accreditor from the school's accreditation page. Schools whose rates we could not read from their site were left out. Rates change every academic year; re-check before enrolling.

Key Takeaways

  • In-state public online programs are usually the cheapest legitimate option: UF Online ($129.18/credit), Great Basin ($136-$226/credit), Georgia Southwestern ($176/credit).
  • Flat-rate and competency-based pricing (WGU, TESU, SUU, Excelsior business) makes the effective per-credit cost fall the faster you finish.
  • Per-credit rates hide fees: Wyoming adds $59 per credit to a $236 rate; Charter Oak adds about $305 per semester plus $18.75 per credit; Purdue Global adds $345 per term and quotes quarter credits.
  • Borrowing the full price at the 2026-27 rate of 6.52% costs from about $83 a month (UoPeople) to about $806 a month (Purdue Global at 180 quarter credits) on a 10-year plan.
  • Check every accreditor in ED's DAPIP database. The recognized institutional accreditors here are HLC, MSCHE, NECHE, NWCCU, SACSCOC, and WSCUC.

Most “cheapest online college” rankings recycle tuition numbers that are two or three years old, and some list schools whose accreditation is not recognized by the Department of Education. This guide does something narrower and more useful: it lists only schools whose current tuition we could read on the school's own website today, names the institutional accreditor from the school's own accreditation page, shows the arithmetic behind every total, and then runs the loan math at this year's federal rate.

How to Read the Table

The “figure as stated” column is what the school publishes. The “estimated total” column multiplies that figure out to a 120-semester-credit degree (or the school's own total where one is published) using the assumption shown. Totals exclude textbooks unless the school includes them, exclude any residency surcharge unless noted, and assume no transfer credit. Transfer credit is the single biggest lever: a student who arrives with a 60-credit associate degree roughly halves every total below. Schools are sorted from cheapest to most expensive estimated total.

All tuition figures read from the linked school pages on September 17, 2026. Accreditors read from each school's accreditation page the same day, except Fort Hays State, whose accreditation page did not load; verify it in DAPIP before relying on it. Purdue Global and Excelsior credit-count assumptions are ours, not the schools'. Not included because rates could not be read from the school's site today: Valdosta State (PDF schedules), Lamar University (online rates not on the tuition page), East Texas A&M, and FIU Online.

What Stands Out

Residency still matters online. UF Online's non-resident rate is $552.62 per credit, more than four times the resident rate. Wyoming charges non-residents $432 versus $236. Great Basin adds $68-$113 per credit for online non-residents. If your state has a public online program, price it first. If it does not, the schools that charge one rate to everyone (WGU, SUU Online, APUS, Charter Oak, CSU Global, ASU Online) become the comparison set.

Flat-rate pricing rewards pace. WGU's $3,850 covers as many competency units as you can pass in six months. TESU's $3,595 term rate kicks in at nine credits, so a 12- or 15-credit term is proportionally cheaper. SUU's $3,780 covers anywhere from 12 to 20 credits. A working adult who can only manage six credits a term will do better on a per-credit school; a full-time student who can carry 15-20 credits will do better on a flat rate.

Fees change the ranking. Wyoming's headline $236 per credit becomes $295 after the distance, student, and advising fees. Charter Oak's $329 becomes about $370 once the per-semester fees and $18.75 per credit materials charge are spread across a 15-credit term. CSU Global and APUS advertise $0 fees, so their per-credit figure is the whole price. Always compute the all-in number before comparing.

University of the People is a real outlier. Its model charges assessment fees rather than tuition, and it holds WSCUC institutional accreditation, which its accreditation page notes is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. It dropped its DEAC accreditation at the end of 2025, which matters only if you were relying on DEAC specifically. Check whether the credits will transfer where you might eventually want them to go; that is a bigger practical question than the accreditation itself.

If You Borrowed the Full Price

Federal Direct Loans first disbursed between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027 carry a fixed 6.52% rate for undergraduates. The 10-year standard payment is P × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)−120) where i is 0.0652 ÷ 12. For loans made on or after July 1, 2026, the standard plan is tiered by balance: 10 years under $25,000, 15 years from $25,000 to under $50,000, 20 years from $50,000 to under $100,000, 25 years at $100,000 or more. Dependent undergraduates also face annual federal Direct Loan limits, so the larger totals below could not be financed with student Direct Loans alone; Parent PLUS or private loans would carry different rates.

DegreeCalc amortization at 6.52% fixed. Tiered term per Higher Education Act section 455(d)(7) as amended in 2025 for loans made on or after July 1, 2026. Longer terms reduce the payment but increase total interest; a $46,200 balance costs about $16,800 in interest over 10 years and about $26,300 over 15.

Verification Checklist Before You Enroll

  1. Accreditation. Look the school up in the Department of Education's DAPIP database and confirm the institutional accreditor matches the school's claim. Then check whether your field needs programmatic accreditation (nursing, engineering technology, social work, business at some employers).
  2. Transfer credit policy. Ask for a written evaluation of your existing credits before you pay a deposit. Some schools accept 90 transfer credits; others cap at 60 or require the last 30 credits in residence.
  3. All-in price. Add per-credit fees, per-term fees, proctoring, course materials, and graduation fees. Ask whether the rate is locked for your enrollment or revised each year.
  4. Net price. Run the school's net price calculator with your FAFSA numbers. Pell Grants (up to $7,395 in 2026-27) apply to accredited online programs the same as campus programs.
  5. Outcomes. Check College Scorecard for the program's median earnings and typical debt, and NCES College Navigator for the school's reported graduation and retention rates.

For a wider view of online options, see best online colleges, the guide to online degree programs, and fastest online degrees. If you are still deciding whether online is the right format at all, is an online degree worth it works through the trade-offs. Residents of states with tuition-free programs should read free college programs by state first, and students who already hold a two-year credential should compare the highest-paying associate degrees before committing to two more years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest accredited online bachelor's degree?

Of the schools whose tuition pages we verified on September 17, 2026, University of the People is the lowest total cost at its own estimate of $7,260 for a bachelor's in business administration or computer science (a $180 assessment fee per course plus a $60 application fee, no tuition). It is accredited by WSCUC. Among public universities, University of Florida Online charges Florida residents $129.18 per credit hour including required fees, about $15,502 for 120 credits.

How do I confirm an online college is legitimately accredited?

Search the school in the U.S. Department of Education's DAPIP database or the CHEA directory and confirm the institutional accreditor listed there matches what the school claims. The institutional accreditors named by the schools in this guide are HLC, MSCHE, NECHE, NWCCU, SACSCOC, and WSCUC. Also confirm the specific program has any programmatic accreditation your field requires, such as CCNE or ACEN for nursing or AACSB or ACBSP for business.

What would borrowing the full price cost per month?

At the 2026-27 undergraduate Direct Loan rate of 6.52%, a $15,502 balance costs about $176 a month on the 10-year standard plan. A $30,800 balance costs about $350 a month over 10 years, or about $269 a month over 15 years under the tiered standard plan that applies to loans made on or after July 1, 2026. A $69,600 balance costs about $791 a month over 10 years or $520 over 20 years. Longer terms lower the payment but raise total interest substantially.

Why is per-credit tuition sometimes misleading?

Three reasons. Some schools quote per-credit tuition but add per-credit or per-term fees that raise the real price 10-25 percent. Some quote quarter credits, so a degree needs about 180 credits rather than 120. And flat-rate or competency-based pricing (WGU, TESU, SUU, Excelsior's fixed-rate business program) rewards students who complete more credits per term, so the effective per-credit cost depends on your pace.
