How we ensure accuracy, transparency, and trustworthiness across all DegreeCalc education and college planning calculators.
Our Commitment to Accuracy
Education is one of the largest financial investments a person makes. DegreeCalc exists to help students and families navigate these decisions with accurate, transparent data. Our calculators are built on official government education data and established financial formulas, so you can plan with confidence.
Every calculator is validated against authoritative data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), College Board, and Federal Student Aid. We cross-reference our outputs with official financial aid formulas and published tuition data to ensure our estimates reflect reality.
Data Sources and Verification
We rely exclusively on authoritative, publicly available data sources:
- National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) — IPEDS tuition data, enrollment statistics, and completion rates used in our College Cost Calculator and College Comparison tool.
- College Board — Trends in College Pricing reports, average tuition data, and financial aid statistics referenced across our tools.
- Federal Student Aid (FSA) — Federal loan interest rates, repayment plan terms, and EFC formula parameters powering our Student Loan Calculator and FAFSA EFC Calculator.
- Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — Occupational earnings data by education level used in our Degree ROI Calculator.
- Department of Education — College Scorecard data including median earnings, graduation rates, and default rates.
All data sources are cited on the relevant calculator pages. When new IPEDS data or College Board reports are published, we update our figures and note the academic year they reflect.
Fact-Checking Process
Our fact-checking process follows three stages:
- Source verification — Every data point (tuition figures, loan rates, GPA scales) is traced to its original NCES, FSA, or College Board source. We do not use secondary aggregators as primary references.
- Formula validation — Financial formulas (compound interest, amortization, net present value) are tested against known benchmark calculations and verified with standard financial computation methods.
- Cross-referencing — College cost estimates are compared against published College Board averages and IPEDS survey data to verify they fall within expected ranges.
Content Standards
All content published on DegreeCalc adheres to these standards:
- Clarity — Financial aid terminology is explained in plain language. Terms like "EFC," "cost of attendance," and "capitalized interest" are defined when introduced.
- Completeness — Each calculator page explains what the tool does, required inputs, the formulas used, and important limitations of the estimate.
- Currency — Tuition data, loan interest rates, and FAFSA formulas are updated within 60 days of official releases. Pages clearly state which academic year or data vintage they reflect.
- Objectivity — We present education data without promoting any specific institution, lender, or financial product. Our Scholarship Calculator and other tools provide neutral estimates.
Corrections Policy
We are committed to correcting errors promptly. If an inaccuracy is identified:
- We investigate the reported issue and verify against authoritative sources within 48 hours.
- Corrections are applied directly to affected calculators without delay.
- Material corrections are noted on the page with an explanation of what changed.
- When federal loan rates or FAFSA parameters change, all related calculators are updated simultaneously.
Editorial Independence
DegreeCalc operates independently. Our calculators do not promote any specific college, university, student loan provider, or financial product. We do not accept payment to influence calculator results or bias content toward any institution. The accuracy and neutrality of our tools come first.
Privacy and Data Handling
All calculations run entirely in your browser. No income data, GPA information, or financial details are transmitted to our servers. Education and financial planning data is sensitive, and our client-side architecture ensures it remains on your device. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
